Pregnant Louisiana Teen Killed in Road Rage Shooting After Delivering Baby via Emergency C-Section

Seventeen-year-old Katelynn Strate of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, was just weeks away from becoming a mother when a violent road rage encounter changed everything. Shot in the head during a Sunday morning drive, she was rushed to the hospital where doctors performed an emergency C-section to deliver her premature baby. Strate died a day later, but her family says her legacy lives on through her newborn and the decision to donate her organs.

A Morning Drive Turns Deadly

On August 24, around 9 a.m., Katelynn was riding in the front passenger seat of a Ford Expedition on North Hoover Road with two others. Behind them, investigators say, was 54-year-old Barry West in a silver Dodge truck. According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO), the two vehicles had been tailgating and brake-checking one another when West fired a single round into the Expedition, striking Katelynn in the head.

Emergency C-Section Saves the Baby

The driver rushed her directly to the hospital while calling 911. Doctors immediately performed an emergency C-section to deliver her 28-week-old baby. Though premature, the infant survived and remains in the NICU, where officials say the child is “doing well under medical care.” The next day, TPSO confirmed that Katelynn had succumbed to her injuries, leaving behind her newborn and grieving family.

A Family’s Heartbreaking Gift

In a statement, police revealed that Katelynn’s family made the decision to donate her organs, describing it as giving the “Gift of Life.” Loved ones are now rallying around her baby, who will be raised by Katelynn’s grandmother. A GoFundMe campaign created to support funeral costs, medical bills, and long-term care for the infant has already raised more than $25,000.

Suspect Faces Upgraded Charges

Barry West was initially booked on four counts of attempted second-degree murder, along with charges of illegal use of a weapon and obstruction of justice. After Katelynn’s death, his charges were upgraded to include one count of second-degree murder. Authorities clarified that despite speculation, West has no employment history with the sheriff’s office. His bond and court proceedings remain pending.

A Community in Mourning

Sheriff Gerald Sticker called the shooting a “senseless tragedy,” urging drivers to remain patient on the roads. “There is no logical reason for this family to be experiencing this heartbreak right now,” he said. Community members are remembering Katelynn as a young woman excited to be a mother. While her life was cut short, her baby’s survival and the family’s choice to donate her organs have brought some measure of hope out of devastating loss.
