Victim Identified
Authorities have identified the second young student who died in the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on August 27, 2025. The 10-year-old girl was named Harper Moyski by her family. Harper and 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel were the two children killed when a 23-year-old gunman opened fire during a school mass held before the second day of classes. Harper was a student at the school and remembered as bright, joyful, and deeply loved.
Family Statement
Harper’s parents, Michael Moyski and Jackie Flavin, released a heartfelt statement Thursday, expressing the depth of their grief. They described Harper as a child whose laughter, kindness, and spirit touched everyone who knew her. The family emphasized that while they focus on healing, they hope Harper’s memory will inspire action against gun violence and the mental health crisis in the country.
Injuries and Impact
Authorities reported that 18 other people were injured in the shooting, including 15 children and three elderly churchgoers in their 80s. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the attack “unspeakable,” urging the public to consider the victims as their own children and to offer support to the grieving families.
Shooter and Response
The gunman, 23-year-old Robin Westman, had ties to the school through his mother, who had previously worked there. Westman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the school parking lot. Principal Matthew DeBoer praised teachers and students for their heroic actions, noting that adults and older students protected younger children, likely preventing an even greater tragedy.
Timeline of the Attack
The shooting began just before 8:30 a.m. when Westman fired from outside the church, shooting through windows at students gathered for morning prayer. Law enforcement and first responders quickly arrived on the scene, securing the area and attending to the wounded. Despite the rapid response, two children lost their lives, leaving the community in mourning.
Community Mourning
Vigils and memorials quickly followed the shooting, as Minneapolis residents came together to honor the victims and support survivors. Harper Moyski’s family, along with others affected, have called for meaningful action to address gun violence and prevent future tragedies.
