Hundreds Honor 2 Children Killed and 17 Wounded in Minneapolis Catholic School Shooting

What began as a routine morning Mass at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis turned into a nightmare when a 23-year-old gunman opened fire inside the church. Two children were killed and 17 others wounded before the suspect, identified as Robin Westman, took their own life. Witnesses described chaos as teachers rushed students to safety, with some shielding children from bullets at the cost of their own injuries.

Swift Police Response

Police arrived within minutes, finding multiple firearms and a smoke bomb at the scene. Authorities said the attack appeared carefully planned and described it as an act of domestic terrorism. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara credited the fast response of teachers and officers with preventing further loss of life, noting that many children had been quickly evacuated through side exits and basements.

Searching for Answers

Investigators are now piecing together the motive. Westman had posted disturbing videos and writings online that suggested anti-religious views and threats toward public officials. Officials confirmed that the suspect identified as transgender, though leaders urged the public not to stigmatize the wider community. For grieving families, however, the focus remains on mourning two young lives cut short and healing a school forever changed.

A Community in Mourning

Hundreds gathered outside the school for a candlelight vigil, where clergy, parents, and neighbors prayed for the victims and embraced grieving families. Flowers and stuffed animals now cover the steps of the church, serving as a memorial to the two children killed. City leaders promised to provide long-term counseling and support for students traumatized by the attack.

National Calls for Action

The shooting has sparked fresh debate over school safety and access to firearms, with state lawmakers vowing to push for stricter gun laws. President Biden issued a statement condemning the violence and offering federal assistance. For Minneapolis, however, the focus remains local, helping families begin the long process of healing after a tragedy that has shaken the entire city.
